Why Didn't I Think Of That?

Just can't seem to nail the wrap and roll technique that an ordinary curling iron requires? Ummm. Me neither. Luckily for the hair challenged that want that beach wave look (yes you can still rock this look even though summer is over), the Infiniti Pro by Conair Curl Secret ($99 on Ulta.com) is an automated curler that makes Taylor Swift-worthy waves a breeze.

To use, clamp a small section of hair in the round portion of the tool, Squeeze the handle and the tool rolls the hair up into the chamber. After you hear a series of beeps, release and the curl is set. Repeat as needed.

2012 fall looks for your locks

Your wardrobe’s not the only thing in need of an update this fall — admit it, you’re kind of sick of sporting the same beachy, messy strands every day, aren't you? Not to mention how fried your mane looks after all those months of fun in the sun. Clearly, it's time to change it up as fall 2012 gets underway.

{Style}

Blunt Bangs: If you’ve got ‘em, flaunt ‘em. Bangs are the ultimate hair accessory this season. Whether they’re full and square, short and rounded or just swept to the side, bangs frame the face and accentuate the eyes. When styling, start drying the bangs first and remember to use the nozzle attachment on your blow-dryer. The key to getting the perfect style is by directing the airflow straight down from the root . Using a vent or denman brush and brushing side to side will keep them sleek and prevent you from looking like you’re seven-years-old again and your mother just cut your fringe with some kitchen shears. No bangs? No worries! Go commitment-free and use clip-in textured bangs from LUXHAIR™. They are simple to use and come in a variety of shades.

Perfectly Imperfect: Your friend calls it bedhead, you call it beach hair. Call it what you want but it's fabulous and effortless. Imperfect texture catches the eye and leaves a statement. But you can’t get that seductively captivating coif without using great product. Word to the wise, invest in some dry shampoo or a sprayable root powder and some pomade. Dry shampoo or sprayable powder “dirties” up the hair and gives you instant playful texture. For the ends, rub a little pomade on your thumb and pointer finger and gently twist the ends of hair to keep texture waves in place.

Boisterous Bouffants: Not the Amy Winehouse kind, think more vintage Sophia Loren. This is going to be a great style for fall brides who want to ditch the updos and go for something more dramatic. When looking for a point of reference, flip through vintage magazines. Elle magazine even is chock-full of inspiration and throwback. Remember this, classics never make a comeback. They wait for that perfect moment to take the spotlight from overdone, tired trends.

Buns, Braids & Twists: Whether braided around the crown, coiled half-back or knotted into an updo, hair is getting manipulated into a fresh, new direction this season. While some looks require an extra set of hands, others put a simple and attainable twist on the classics. Double fishtails and triple braids are taking plaits to the next level. My advice to you: practice makes perfect. Grab some dry shampoo and start watching how-to videos. You’ll be surprised how simple some of these styles are to achieve.

Sweeping Side Part: The hottest look for a night out is a deep side part. If that part is not at least three inches in length then start over. The wider the part, the more open your eyes appear. It is an alluring and seductive look that will keep your date’s attention the entire night. To get the most drama out of the part, I recommend using the highest point of your eyebrow as a point of reference. Using a fine-tooth comb, slowly draw your comb back from the crown to create the part. Once the part has been created, spray medium-hold hairspray onto a boar bristle brush and brush hair on both sides away from the part to set it. Next, spray hair all over with a lightweight hairspray. To add a little glimmer and reflection, use small amount of shine serum along the part line. The light will bounce of it and make your eyes sparkle.

Perfect Ponytail: Ponytails this season, no matter if they’re high or low, are perfectly precise and chic and not that gym-wearing pony you’ve been trying to pass off as fashionable. Put some effort and styling into the look. It will only take two minutes and you’ll look like you just stepped off the runway and not out of a Body Pump class. First, prep your hair with a light serum to add shine. Pull hair back using a flat brush to get hair smooth. Secure with a band. Next, take a lightweight hairspray and spray lightly, To smooth down the surface and prevent those pesky bumps, spray hairspray onto a clean toothbrush (or a small hard bristle brush) and run it over the surface of your pony tail.

{Color}

Rich Chocolates & Cool Reds: You’re going to see a shift in color this season, especially in brunettes and reds. Color will go from less caramel to deep chocolate, less coppery to cool and slightly spicy crimson. During a color consultation, reference food as a visual. Hot fudge and orange marmalade paint a clearer picture and helps prevent end results that leave you feeling unsatisfied.

Brave Blonde: It’s time to say good-bye to flaxen and golden hues and hello to cooler, icy blondes and creamy white highlights. Now that the seasons are changing and your summer bronze-y glow is slowly fading, it’s important for all you blondes to adjust your hair color to complement your skin color. If icy and white is too extreme for your eye color and skin tone, then go more beige-y or even a little ash-y. Trust your colorist and let them determine what’s best for you. And don’t forget to maintain the look. Make sure you’re seeing your colorist on a regular basis, even if it is for a slight touch-up. Remember, when you stretch out your appointments the process if more intense and time consuming which results in a higher ticket price. Also look into shampoos that help neutralize the brass and keep you always looking cool.

{Cuts}

Bobs: Bobs come in all forms; angled, modern, lobs, etc. The cut and styling options are endless. They key to pulling of the perfect bob is finding a look that complements your bone structure. If you have a more round face, then opt for a lob with side-swept bangs. If you have a longer neck and pronounced chin, then a modern bob with a blunt fringe will make your eyes pop. It’s also important your stylist is up-to-date on his or her education. Don’t be shy to ask questions and inquire about them furthering their craft. If they haven’t taken a class in the past two years, then it’s time to find someone new.

Hailey's Hair Favorites

Piggybacking on last week's hair theme, I thought I would share with you some of my personal faves. Regardless if my hair is long or short, sleek or messy, I have a few hair products that if discontinued tomorrow I would mourn their loss quite heavily.

KMS Hair Play Dry Wax - Found in most beauty supply stores or online, this product acts like hairspray but allows you to play with it until you get the style right. It gives your hair a textured, almost dirty feeling without weighing your hair down or looking wet. I discovered this product when my hair was short. I would spray a small amount then tease it for that messy look. Now that my hair is longer, I will bat comb my hair in the crown then spray to give it added volume. I haven't found another product similar so I'm praying this never gets discontinued. $10-15 for a 4.7 oz. bottle.
KMS Colorvitality Blonde Shampoo - I've been using "purple" shampoo for years. The UV filters and optical brightener in this lavender colored shampoo illuminates my blonde locks and fights yellowing better than any other color-enhancing shampoo I've ever used. You have to be careful not to use it everyday though. It can give your hair a silver shine if used too much. You can find in most any beauty supply store or online for $13-32 for either a 10.1 oz or 25.3 oz bottle.
Tresemme 24 hour Body Root Boost Spray - As "In Style" magazines '2010 Volumizer' winner, this is a must buy for sexy hair. Without a volumizing boost to my roots, my hair is as limp and lifeless as they come. While my hair is damp, I spray the Root Boost directly onto my hair, roots to tip, then blow dry for maximum volume. I prefer the Root Boost spray over gel and mouse because it's light, there is no build up, it's not sticky, and doesn't weigh down my hair. For best results, flip your hair upside-down and dry on high heat. $4 for an 8 oz. bottle at Target.

Short Sexy Hair's Frenzy Bulked Up Texture Paste - An awesome product for both men & women. Both my husband and I love the way Frenzy adds that finishing touch. This is a must have product to bring texture and bulk to any short hairstyle. It bonds to your hair to add volume and fullness. It's easy to work through your fingers and it won't leave your hair feeling greasy. It provides a medium to firm hold. It also helps tame those pesky fly-aways. You are guaranteed to find it at Planet Beauty stores or online. Target now carries the Short Sexy Hair line but I have yet to see Frenzy on the shelf. Prices vary depending on store but it will usually run you about $16.00 for a 7 oz. container.

Hot 2011 Men's & Women's CUTS

Need more than just a new way to part your hair? Are you in desperate need to change it up entirely? In 2011 you can look forward to more layers, blunt bangs and razor cut bobs. Of course, right when I grow out my hair, the short haircut becomes the biggest trend for the new year. Oh well, you all can have it now.

Whether you are looking for something subtle or drastic, below is a list of hot cuts that are sure to make you feel like a new woman (or man):

WOMEN:

BLUNT BANGS were popular in 2010 but they are HOT in 2011. They are especially flattering for round and square face shapes and balance out high cheekbones. For a modern, sophisticated look cut the bang just over the eyebrow. What I love about the blunt bang is if you want to change it up at a moments notice you can sweep them to the side for a different look. Best to ask your stylist what bang design fits your face and personality. Bangs work with any style; short, long, curly.

SHAGGY BOBS with textured feathered layers will be big in 2011. Don't be afraid to mix lengths and add volume. Most face shapes compliment the bob nicely. It's timeless, practical and glamorous.

SHORT HAIR - super short - is in full effect. If you've always wanted to try it, now's the time. They should be effortless, youthful and messy. Either a super short edgy bang or a whispy soft bang works well with this short 'do.

MEN:

The FRINGE haircut is the dominant hair trend for gents in 2011. As opposed to 2010, there are more options than just the close-to-eyebrow length. And yes your man can have this look without looking like Justin Bieber.

2011 is all about the SLICKED BACK look. Think George Clooney decked out in Ralph Lauren. It's a look that guarantees success and sophistication.

The CREW CUT is still going strong well into 2011. It can only work it's magic however on an oval shaped face with a normal head. It's usually aggressively short and tapered on the sides and back with a little left to play with on the top. Think David Beckham not military Drill Sargent.

2011 haircut trends are all about bringing the glam factor out in you. Don't forget to spice up your wardrobe with the latest accessories and loads of attitude. Cheers to a new glamorous/handsome YOU!

2011 TRENDS: New Year, New Hair

In need of some styling help? Wondering what's the latest hair trends? I'll speak for myself and answer YES! Since 1998, I've had super short hair. It was easy. Different. I loved it. And secretly I didn't mind the attention it brought me. I was constantly stopped by gasping comments like, "OH MY GOSH, you're hair is to die for!" Or women insisting that they could never wear such a cut, only fishing to hear, "No you totally could!!" During my long journey to get pregnant with baby #2 however, I decided that I wasn't going to cut my hair until I was pregnant. Some idea that was. Not only did I go through the emotional roller coaster of unexplained infertility, I had a mop of hair in that terribly ugly grow out stage. You can only imagine the level of self confidence I had. Yeah - none.

But I pushed through and here I sit, many months later, with a baby in my belly and long(er) hair. Although I thought I would for sure chop my hair after the pregnancy news, I grew to like the change. Although...I now stand in the mirror wondering what the heck to do with it all. Besides a quick blow dry and a little product, I haven't had to really do my hair in the last 12 years. Like most moms, I toss it back in a pony-tail more often than not - something I said I would never fall victim to. Lesson learned - never say never.

So for my own personal style boost, I decided to do a little research on the upcoming hair trends. With the help of Marie Claire magazine, here are six hair trends for 2011. I love that all these are no fuss ways for achieve a fresh look.
1) Short & straight - The hair I am rockin' now. Shoulder length hair styled with a flat iron/hair straightener is always a staple look and easy to wear and manage throughout the year. After doing a poll on Facebook, I learned that the CHI flat iron is the must-own in order to acheive this look. Just think Olivia Palermo and you're headed in the right direction.

2) Wavy - Messy. Natural. This is super easy and will remain a hot style throughout 2011. To obtain the sexy bed-head look, just spritz a few pumps of styling spray into your locks and scrunch with your hands. Wah-la, instant Heidi Klum.

3) Low bun - Instead of new heights, take your 2011 hair to a new low with this Kim Kardashian look. Sleek and polished, this up-do sits at the nape of your neck. Just knot and go.

4) Low ponytail - You can wear this sleek and simple or curly and messy like Jessica Biel. Either way, you can rock this look for a corporate dinner or playing at the park with your kids.

5) Woven locks - Loose low braids. Or tiny braids along the hairline. Either way, you want this look to be laid-back and shabby chic.

6) Side part - Severe. Extreme. And innocently cute. This is a great way to have a new look for no bucks. Just comb it over and you're on your way.

I don't know about you but I'm excited to try out these new looks. I'm lovin' the low pony, braids and side part. The loose and messy isn't my style. Although I wish it was.
